The case for restoration

01
Original windows are an important part of a home's appearance, craftsmanship, and charm. The proportions, glazing bars, and joinery details of period timber windows are rarely matched by modern replacements — once gone, that character is very difficult to recover.

02
Many older timber windows can last for generations when properly maintained. Old-growth timber used in Victorian and Edwardian joinery is exceptionally dense and durable — far more so than the softwoods used in most modern windows. Skilled restoration gives these windows many more decades of life.

03
In many cases, restoration is a more economical option than replacing windows with new high-quality alternatives. Cheap replacement windows rarely replicate what you have. When you factor in the cost of genuinely good new windows — correctly sized, properly fitted, with matching profiles — restoration often proves the better investment.

04
Restoring existing windows reduces waste and avoids the resources required to manufacture and transport new ones. The timber in your windows has already had its environmental cost paid. Choosing restoration keeps that material in use, avoids landfill, and sidesteps the carbon footprint of producing and delivering new frames.

05
Well-maintained, properly sealed windows work better, feel better to live with, and help eliminate draughts and operational problems. Sticking sashes, rattling frames, and cold spots near windows are all fixable. A properly restored and draught-proofed window is noticeably more comfortable — and quieter — than one left in disrepair.
